Nassau, the cays off it, and the long run south

Everyone books the pigs. The question is which boat.

Which pig trip is a half day off Nassau and which is a 90 minute powerboat run to Exuma. What a beach club pass actually includes. Where the turtles feed. Reviews of every tour you can book in the Bahamas.

The pig question

Rose Island in a morning, or the whole day down to Exuma.

Three ways to end up in the water with a pig, at three very different prices. Pick by how much of the day you are willing to give it.

Which island, which boat

Nassau first, then whichever cay the boat can reach.

One busy island with a harbour, a string of day-trip cays ten minutes off it, a second city two hundred miles north west, and the Exumas down the chain. Six places to start, and the best day out in each.

Thirty feet of water

The reef starts where the sand stops.

Bahamian water runs about thirty feet over white sand, which is why it reads that colour from a plane and why you can see the bottom from the boat. Reef snorkels, green turtles fed by hand off Green Cay, and drop-offs that go dark a hundred yards from a beach lounger.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 3,168 travellers on the busiest boat out of Nassau

The whole island is 21 miles long and most of what you came for leaves from one harbour. Walk the old town and the fort early, eat at the fish shacks on Arawak Cay, and keep the water for the afternoon when the cruise crowd has gone back aboard.

The food question

Conch salad, johnnycake and a distillery stop

3–4h· from $75· come hungry

Conch salad is cut and dressed in front of you at the Fish Fry, and the walking version adds johnnycake, guava duff and a distillery stop behind Bay Street. It is the one tour that explains the food for the rest of the week.

The orientation

The island in an afternoon

2–3h· from $55· air conditioned

Queen’s Staircase, Fort Fincastle, the pastel government buildings and the bridge over to Paradise Island, with enough of the history to make the rest of the week make sense. Best done before the ships dock.

The self drive

Your own ATV, east to the beach

3–4h· from $100· licence needed

Everyone drives their own machine along the south shore to a beach break. Hot, loud, dusty and the best way to see the parts of New Providence no tour bus goes near.

Bites of Nassau Food and Walking Tour

Walk through old Nassau with a local guide such as Princess, Lisa, Mark, Pierre, or Captain Ron. Visit five family-owned food businesses, taste conch fritters and Bahamian comfort food, sip a rum cocktail at John Watling’s, and explore Graycliff’s historic grounds. Expect a generous meal, uneven streets, and plenty of local stories.

Off Nassau

The good beach is on a different island, twenty minutes out.

Cable Beach and Cabbage Beach are fine and busy. The water people remember is off New Providence altogether: Rose Island, Pearl Island, Blue Lagoon, Sandy Toes. A boat, a lounger, lunch and a swim with something.

Drive it yourself

New Providence rewards anyone willing to drive on the left.

Past the resort strip the island turns into pine scrub, blowholes and beaches with nobody on them. Quad bikes go east along the south shore, jeeps take the whole loop, and a private car with a driver is the honest answer if the family is large and the day is hot.

Price of a day

What you will actually pay for a day out here.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. The gap between a kayak morning and a seat on the Exuma powerboat is wider here than almost anywhere.

Under $50

Walking tours of the old town, a kayak morning, the dessert and rum cake stops.

$50–150

The standard day: reef and pigs by boat, the ATV run, a beach club pass, a sunset dinner cruise.

$150 and up

Exuma by powerboat or plane, private charters and the small group days that keep the numbers down.

Only here

Three days out you cannot have anywhere else.

Warm water and white sand run the length of the Caribbean. Pigs that swim out to meet a boat, turtles that come to your hand in the shallows, and a cigar rolled in a 1740s Nassau house do not.

Big Major Cay and its copies

The Swimming Pigs

Nobody agrees how the pigs got to Big Major Cay in the Exumas, and the stories run from a shipwreck to a farmer who wanted them out of earshot. They swim out to boats because boats mean food. Nassau operators now keep their own herds on Rose Island and Pearl Island for people who cannot spare the whole day going south, and the animals are the same animals.

Green Cay and the shallows

Swimming with Turtles

Green turtles gather in a few sheltered sand flats off New Providence and Eleuthera where the water sits waist deep and clear. Boats stop, you slide in, and the turtles come to you rather than the other way around. Most pig trips fold this into the same morning, which is why so many titles read like a shopping list.

A 1740s house on West Hill

Graycliff

A former pirate’s house above the old town holds a cigar room where Cuban trained rollers work at a bench, a chocolate factory, a rum bar and a wine cellar of a quarter of a million bottles. You can taste through all four in an afternoon without leaving the property, and it is the one Nassau address that is a destination rather than a stop.

Book ahead

Four Bahamian bookings that will not wait until you land.

Most of Nassau can be sorted from a hotel lobby the night before. These four run on boat manifests, small rooms and one sailing a day.

  1. 01Exuma Elite Escape: Luxury Fly-In Pig Beach Adventure – 7 StopsOne departure a day, a long run each way and a fixed number of seats on the boat. Cancelled outright when the wind gets up, so give it a spare day in the middle of your trip.
  2. 02Graycliff Chocolatier – The Art of Chocolate Interactive TourThe cigar bench, the chocolate room and the cellar all take small numbers at set times. Walk-ins get the shop, not the tasting.
  3. 03Nassau Sunset Dinner CruiseOne sailing a night, and the boat holds what it holds. Sunset moves earlier through the winter, so check the departure time against your dinner plans, not the other way round.
  4. 04Blue Lagoon Island Beach Day from NassauPrivate cay day passes cap the number of people on the sand, which is the whole point of paying for one. Cruise days sell them out first.
Cruise mornings

Six thousand people can dock in Nassau before breakfast.

Up to six ships tie up at Prince George Wharf on a good winter Tuesday, and the old town, the straw market and the nearest beaches take the whole of it. The fix is not to stay in. Be on a boat before nine, put the town at the end of the day, or get off New Providence altogether.

Conch and rum

Bahamian food is cut on a dock, not plated.

Conch salad chopped into a cup at Arawak Cay, cracked conch and johnnycake at a fish shack, guava duff after it, and rum that was distilled twenty minutes from where you are standing.

Which water, which island
A week, in the right order

Nassau, a cay or two, and one long day down the Exuma chain.
